If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door.
”Thanks to the Phoenix Pact fund for giving me the opportunity to help me build my door. Being a first-generation college student, I was confused about the whole idea of college. Not knowing what to expect and having no one close to me to explain it drew many doubtful questions.  What if it’s too hard? What if I fail? Is this really the place for me since no one else in my family did it?”

“It was the wrap-around support from the Phoenix Pact team that helped me dismiss those doubtful questions. From helping me explore different success colleges to knowing all the right words to help keep me motivated on my journey made it worthwhile. I built my door at Illinois State University, graduating in 2020 with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice.”

Repairing the World
”I am repairing the world by coming back to my Alma Mater, NLCP, as the Alumni counselor and helping students build their door through their post-secondary plans. With great hopes, soon I will be working to become a juvenile probation officer."

Advice to RBL Scholars
’“Success is often achieved by those who don't know that failure is inevitable.” As you begin your post-secondary plan, always remember that success comes with failure and if it’s no failure, there's no progress. The journey will not be easy, but if you work hard and keep pushing, you will succeed. Being a part of the NLCP family comes with ample opportunities and support. Lean on your NLCP family for the support you need on your journey. When it's over, take what you learned and repair the world!”
